Sawnee EMC wants to help you build an energy efficient home that affords a comfortable home environment and lower energy costs now and for years to come.

Toward this goal, Sawnee EMC has created the $ensible Home Program. This new program is offered exclusively to Sawnee EMC members and provides guidelines to building a home that saves money, improves comfort, and increases performance. This program is for new, single family, detached, permanent dwellings only. Your home must be inspected during the building process and meet or exceed the program guidelines in order to be branded a $ensible Home. 

2008 Program Standards

Minimum Insulation Value

R-38  Attic – Flat Ceiling

R-30  Attic – Vaulted Ceiling

R-11  Exposed masonry wall of conditioned basement

R-13  Exterior Walls

R-19  In Knee-walls, Over crawl spaces, garage and unconditioned basement

Attic Ventilation - Recommend a continuous ridge vent and equal area of soffit vents

Heat Pump (properly sized and installed to industry standards)

Unitary Split/Package System – 14.0 SEER

Dual Fuel System – 14.0 SEER with 80% furnace

Thermostat - Programmable

Windows – Low-E with .40 maximum Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and maximum .40 U-factor

Exterior Doors – Insulated foam core or solid wood doors

Infiltration Control – Joints, penetrations, and all other sources of air leakage in the building envelope must be sealed

Ductwork – Recommend all ductwork be located in conditioned space or unfinished basement and properly sized, sealed with mastic, with minimal restrictions, and insulated

Water Heaters – Recommended an energy factor of 0.85 or higher on electric water heaters. Gas water heaters are acceptable if the home has a dual fuel heat pump. An energy factor of 0.6 or higher is recommended for gas units.

Energy Star– Must include at least two Energy star qualified appliances



Sawnee EMC offers its members a $500 rebate upon completion and verification of all $ensible Home requirements. All rebate monies shall be paid to the member and may be obtained through the calendar year of 2008 ---- while funds are available. Program and rebates are subject to change without notice.
