(Cumming, GA) – In October 2007, in the midst of one of the worst droughts in Georgia’s history, Governor Sonny Perdue challenged all north Georgia businesses and utilities to cut their water consumption by 10%.  As a response to this challenge, Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation sought help from local experts and, through a “water audit” of their corporate campus in Cumming, was able to identify several areas that needed improvement..

Prior to the water audit, Sawnee EMC had already made certain reductions in its water use by prohibiting the washing of all corporate vehicles and eliminating all outside watering including landscaping and pressure washing.  However, the water consultant recommended additional steps that Sawnee EMC could take to save even more of this state’s most precious resource – Water.  Those steps have since been implemented and resulted in Sawnee EMC reducing its water consumption by over 22%  -  More than double what Governor Perdue requested businesses and utilities to cut.

“At the request of our consultant, we replaced 25 restroom facilities which were manufactured almost 20 years ago; these older units accounted for higher water usage than the newer models.  We also modified many of our faucets with low flow devices” states Blake House, Vice President of Member Services.  “As a leader in the community, and one that stresses the importance of conservation daily, it was our duty to reduce our water consumption and encourage our members to take steps to reduce their personal water usage as well.

Sawnee EMC is proud of its heritage in meeting the needs of communities that it serves.  They are proud to be assisting Georgia with this mission of water consumption and encourage all Sawnee EMC members to do the same.  Together, we can make a difference.
