CUMMING, GA. (May 7, 2002)
– Three area students were each awarded $1,000 scholarships by Sawnee EMC at
the spring meeting of the Sawnee EMC Consumer Advisory Task Force (CATF) on May
7.
The scholarship recipients were Zain Gulamali, Chattahoochee High School;
Victoria Ann Tenney, Sequoyah High School; and Elizabeth Swafford, Dawson
County High School.
The scholarships are funded by contributions from the cooperative’s employees
and CATF members.
“As a member-owned cooperative, Sawnee EMC supports our community in many
ways,” said Michael Goodroe, executive vice president and general manager.
“Through these scholarships, we’re able to recognize young people who are
making a positive contribution.”
The scholarship recipients were chosen from five finalists in a field of 31
applicants from seven area schools. Represented were Chattahoochee High School,
Dawson High School, Sequoyah High School, Forsyth Central High School, North
Forsyth High School, South Forsyth High School and St. Francis High School. A
panel of three retired educators judged the applicants based on school,
community and work activities, an autobiographical essay and an interview. The
scholarships may be used at an accredited college, university, vocational or
technical school.
Gulamali, son of Ahmed and Bibi Gulamali, will attend Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Tenney, daughter of George and Charolette Tenney, will attend
the University of Georgia. Elizabeth Swafford, daughter of Gerald and Eleanor
Swafford, will attend Brenau University.
Sawnee EMC serves more than 100,000 customers in a seven-county area, including
Cherokee, Dawson, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall and Lumpkin. It is the
third-largest electric cooperative in Georgia.
