Congratulations to all of the Sawnee Foundation Scholarship recipients!

The scholarship program began in 1999 by Sawnee EMC. The funds were raised by the employees and the Consumer Advisory Task Force. In 2006, the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation began awarding the scholarships. New legislation allowed EMCs to keep unclaimed patronage capital to use for education, economic development, or as donations to 501 (c) charitable entities. Sawnee EMC chose the Foundation to receive these funds. Over the last ten years, $103,000 has been awarded to 41 outstanding high school seniors.

“As a member-owned cooperative, Sawnee EMC and the Sawnee Foundation support our community in many ways,” said Blake House, Vice President of Member Services. “Through these scholarships, we are able to recognize young people who have worked hard in school and made a positive contribution in their community.”

The scholarship recipients were chosen from a field of 43 applicants from fourteen area high schools. A panel of three (3) retired educators judged the applicants based on school, community and work activities, an autobiographical essay and an interview. The scholarships will be used at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.
