CUMMING (May 23, 2000) — Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (Sawnee) presented the winners of its first scholarship program with $1,000 each to further their educational endeavors. Amy Allgire, a student of Dawson County High School, received the scholarship that was funded by the Sawnee Consumer Advisory Task Force (CATF).The second scholarship, funded by the employees of Sawnee EMC, was given to Lauren Gallaspy, a student of Milton High School. The scholarships were presented at a reception at the Sawnee EMC headquarters building in Cumming.

“Sawnee believes in supporting the communities that we work, live, and play in, by giving back in any way we can.We do this not only by improving the quality of life through fulfilling members’ energy requirements, but also through activities that benefit the society as a whole,” said Michael A. Goodroe, Sawnee’s Executive V.P. and General Manager. “We will continue the scholarship program and hopefully expand it to include a larger number of scholarships in the years to come. This program differentiates Sawnee as a superior, member-focused company investing in the youth of this area and their future.”

The youth college scholarship program was a huge success this year and was supported financially by voluntary donations. “We know that the cooperative was established over 60 years ago on principles that centered around supporting the communities in which it served,” states Melisa Watson, Manager of Marketing for Sawnee.“We wanted to give back to the communities and make a difference in the continuing education of these recipients,” she added.
