Cumming, GA. - Two area students were each awarded $2,000 scholarships by Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation at a reception on May 20, 2004.
The scholarship recipients were Lydia Luangruangrong, Milton High School and Sarah Darby, Dawson County High School.
This is the 5th year that Sawnee EMC has offered the youth scholarship program. The scholarships are funded by contributions from the cooperative’s employees and CATF members. A total of $15,000 has been awarded to eleven (11) outstanding recipients over the last five years.
“As a member-owned cooperative, Sawnee EMC supports our community in many ways,” said Michael Goodroe, President and CEO. “Through these scholarships, we’re able to recognize young people who are making a positive contribution.”
The scholarship recipients were chosen from four finalists in a field of 51 applicants from eleven area schools.
A panel of three retired educators judged the applicants based on school, community and work activities, an autobiographical essay and an interview.
The scholarships may be used at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.
Lydia Luangruangrong, daughter of Ken and Nuit Luangruangrong, will attend the University of Georgia. Sarah Darby, daughter of Danny and Renee Darby, will attend the University of Georgia.
