CUMMING, Ga. – Lauryn Howland of Dawson and Daniel Armstrong of Forsyth were selected to represent Sawnee EMC during the 2006 National Rural Electrification Association Washington Youth Tour. Both delegates were chosen from applications submitted by students from schools throughout the Sawnee EMC service area. “It was a difficult decision. All of the applicants had very impressive academic resumes and I have no doubt they will all reach their goals in life,” states Blake House, Vice President of Member Services.
Lauryn and Daniel will join other students from Georgia and across the nation June 8-15, 2006. The Tour will start in Atlanta with the students getting a quick look into what an EMC is and the important role they play in our communities. The delegates will participate in leadership exercises and tour Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs. Then it is off to Washington to get a first-hand look at our government in action, visit with our senators and representatives and tour many major monuments and museums.
Senator Lyndon Johnson inspired the Washington Youth Tour at
the NRECA Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. Since then,
over 40,000 students have visited Washington to learn about
electric cooperatives, American history and U.S.
government. The rural electric cooperatives think education
is important – education about electric cooperatives and
education about America, therefore the tradition continues.
