Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation Awards Seven Scholarships

(Cumming, GA, June 8, 2006)- On June 6, 2006, seven area students were each awarded $3,000 scholarships by the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation at a reception held at Sawnee EMC.

            The 2006 scholarship recipients are:

Michael Harvey – Graduate of Cherokee High School – son of Donna and John Harvey. Michael plans to attend University of Georgia.

Courtney Lynn – Graduate of Dawson County High School– daughter of Kathy and Lawrence Lynn. Courtney plans to attend North Georgia College and State University.

Erin Norton – Graduate of Dawson County High School – daughter of Cindy Norton. Erin plans to attend North Georgia College and State University.

Hunter Daigle – Graduate of Forsyth Central High School – son of Danielle and David Daigle. Hunter plans to attend Georgia Institute of Technology.

YouRong Sophie Su – Graduate of Northview High School – daughter of Yan Wang and Cheng Gao. Sophie plans to attend Johns Hopkins University.

Rebecca Damren – Graduate of North Gwinnett High School – daughter of Nancy Gilmer and Charles Damren. Rebecca plans to attend University of Evansville.

Christopher Cox – Graudate of West Hall High School – son of Patricia and Michael Cox. Christopher plans to attend Mercer University.

            This is the seventh year that Sawnee has offered a youth scholarship program for deserving high school seniors.  A total of $40,000 has been awarded to twenty outstanding recipients over the last seven years.

            “As a member-owned cooperative, Sawnee EMC and the Sawnee Foundation support our community in many ways,” said Blake House, Vice President of Member Services. “Through these scholarships, we are able to recognize young people who have worked hard in school and made a positive contribution in their community.”

            The scholarship recipients were chosen from a field of 46 applicants from thirteen area high schools. A panel of three (3) retired educators judged the applicants based on school, community and work activities, an autobiographical essay and an interview. The scholarships will be used at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.
