(Cumming, GA, May 27, 2003)—Two area students were each awarded $2,000 scholarships by Sawnee EMC at the spring meeting of the Sawnee EMC Consumer Advisory Task Force (CATF) on May 22, 2003.

The scholarship recipients were Kelly Straub, Milton High School and Matthew Hollar, South Forsyth High School.

Scholarship funds are generated from employee and CATF fundraisers. The program is administered by the Sawnee EMC Marketing staff and “volunteers” from the education profession.

“As a member-owned cooperative, Sawnee EMC supports our community in many ways,” said Michael Goodroe, executive vice president and general manager. “Through these scholarships, we’re able to recognize young people who are making a positive contribution.”

Participation was overwhelming this year. A total of 68 applicants representing eleven (11) schools competed for the scholarships. Schools represented were South Forsyth High, Forsyth Central High, Dawson County High, Chattahoochee High, North Forsyth High, Milton High, Sequoyah High, Centennial High, Lumpkin County, St. Francis, and Woodward Academy. A panel of retired educators judged the applicants based on GPA, S.A.T. or A.C.T score, honors & awards, school activities, community & work activities, letters of recommendations, an essay and a personal interview. The scholarship may be used at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.

Kelly Straub is the daughter of Dane Straub and Carol Mulvaney. She will attend Georgia Institute of Technology. Matthew Hollar is the son of Joe and Donna Hollar. He has plans to attend Vanderbilt University.
