Contact: Blake House (Cumming, GA) Sawnee EMC of Cumming, Georgia announced today that it had deployed real simple syndication, or “RSS”, feed engine at its Web site – www.sawnee.com. “Today, we need more than just a monthly newsletter or even blast emails to keep our members up to date with what is going on with the co-op”, states Blake House, Vice President of Member and Energy Services of Sawnee EMC. “Sawnee EMC has always strived to be on the cutting edge when it comes to member communications and the use of this technology will just further enhance our ability to keep our members up to date”, he added. RSS feeds are not new and have been around since the mid 90s. RSS feeds are in a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed”, “Web feed”, or “channel”, contains either a summary of content from an associated Web site, such as sawnee.com, or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite Web sites in an automated manner that’s easier than checking them manually. RSS content can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader” or an “aggregator”. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed’s link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds. “We want our members to have the most up-to-date information about Sawnee EMC delivered directly to them”, states Cindy Badgett, Director of External Affairs. “We feel that many of our members have feed aggregators or are using an email client that can accept RSS feeds, such as Microsoft’s Outlook 2007”, she added.
