Start Saving Today!

It's hot outside.  Have you been sitting inside, with the air conditioner set at 75 degrees (or lower), wondering what you can do to lower your electric bill?  Before you read any further, take a minute and make sure that your thermostat is set at 78 degrees.  Okay - thermostat at 78 degrees?  Congratulations - you have just lowered your electric bill - if you keep the setting at 78 degrees for the entire month.  Your air conditioner is the biggest user of electricity in the summer, and it is important that you operate it efficiently to keep your electric bill as low as possible.

Now let's take a look at you ductwork.  Consider using mastic (also known as air duct sealant) to "tighten" up your existing ductwork.  Head to the basement or attic and apply the mastic everywhere you see a taped duct joint.  This is a very inexpensive way to ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from your air conditioner.  Also, don't forget to change those air filters.  If they have not been changed recently, do it as soon as possible.

Have you checked your insulation lately?  If you answered, "Hmmmm...insulation - do we have insulation?", then you definitely need to keep reading!  Sawnee EMC recommends upgrading your attic insulation to at least an R-38, which is approximately 17 inches of blown fiberglass.  Need a little assistance with paying for the insulation upgrade?  Just take advantage of our insulation rebate.  Below is a  list of the various rebates that Sawnee EMC offers:

  • Insulation - Bring your attic value up to an R-38 and receive a rebate of 1/2 of the cost to a maximum of $200.00.

  • Ventilation - Add an additional form of ventilation to your attic and receive a rebate of 1/2 of the cost to a maximum of $75.00.

  • Programmable Thermostat - Replace an existing manual thermostat with a programmable one and receive 1/2 of the cost to a maximum of $25.00.

  • Residential Lighting - Purchase a minimum of 10 compact fluorescent bulbs and receive a rebate of 1/2 of the cost to a maximum of $20.00.

  • Heat Pump - Replace your existing air conditioner with a 14 SEER heat pump and receive a rebate of $75.00 per ton to a site maximum of $375.00.

Note:  If you decide to take advantage of any of these rebates, simply save your receipt and fax it to (678)513-8106 or mail a copy to Sawnee EMC, Energy Services, 543 Atlanta Highway, Cumming Georgia 30040.  All receipts must be submitted by December 31, 2006.

Consider This When Considering a Power Ventilator...

Power attic ventilators are a source of attic ventilation for homes.  When a power ventilator is used with a combination of adequate soffit venting, as well as proper sealing between the house and attic, it can provide a good source of ventilation.  However, there are some considerations to remember.  For instance, a standard power ventilator will consume electricity, which will increase your energy costs over time.  An alternative to this is a solar powered ventilator.  Also, power ventilators can cause depressurization problems inside your house, which can include a loss of conditioned air.

If you decide to shop for a power ventilator, it is important to know the square footage of your attic.  Power ventilators are rated according to the cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow that they create.  Keep in mind that bigger is not always better when it comes to power ventilators.  Oversized power ventilators can cause conditioned air to be pulled out of your house and into the attic through cracks in the ceiling.  It is always a good rule of thumb to seal all cracks between the house and attic by using weather stripping, caulking or rigid board insulation.

So, next time you look at your ceiling, think about what you can do to make your attic more energy efficient.  Got questions?  Call one of our trained energy experts to help make your home or business more energy efficient.  We have many grants and services that can help you to lower your bill and make your home more comfortable.

Let’s take a look at laundry!  Even when you start that weekly laundry routine, there are ways you can save energy.  Keep reading to find out how.

  • Use cold water whenever possible.

  • Wash and dry full loads.

  • Don't over dry clothes.  Select the setting that is right for the clothes that you are drying

  • Dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from lighter weight materials.

  • Use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the residual heat in the dryer.

  • Clean the lint filter in the dryer after ever load to improve circulation.

Third Party Notification

Sawnee EMC recognizes that sometimes people forget to pay their monthly electric bill.  There are many reasons why this may happen - travel, illness, hospitalization and sometimes people do “just forget”.  Due to reasons like these, Sawnee EMC developed a program called “Third Party Notification”.  This program serves as a “safety net” to help prevent electric service interruptions for nonpayment by letting another person, that you authorize, be made aware of this event.

Under this program, Sawnee EMC will notify a “designated” third party, such as a neighbor, relative or social service agency, to also receive your past-due or disconnect notices.  While the third party is not responsible for paying the bill, he or she may be able to help arrange for payment, make a payment or otherwise assist in the process, therefore, helping to avoid the disconnection of service.

Third Party Notification is a free service and may be set up by only you.  Be assured your privacy will be protected at all times and we will only advise those you authorize.  This service provides assurance that someone other than you will be notified if electric service is subject to disconnection for nonpayment.
