THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE COMING

How can you keep your house cool this summer?  Turning the thermostat down is not the only way.  If this is the approach you normally take, try following these steps to cool your house during Georgia’s summer heat...you’ll save energy and money and you’ll also reduce the stress on your air conditioner.

- Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature to a higher setting at night or when no one is home.  Sawnee offers a rebate for this action.

- Keep lamps and TVs away from your thermostat.  The heat from these items may cause the air conditioner to run longer than needed.

- Consider installing white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect the heat away from the inside of the house.

- Be sure to close curtains on the south and west facing windows during the day to help keep unwanted sun from heating your home.

- Consider applying sun control reflective window films on south facing windows.

-
Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.  Save on water and the cost to operate your appliances.

- Make sure there’s adequate caulking and weather stripping around your windows and doors.  Remember that caulking and weather stripping will keep cold air in during these hot summer months.

These easy steps will help keep your home comfortable and save you money this and every summer.    For additional energy saving information, please visit our Energy Center online at www.sawnee.com or call our Member Services Section.  At Sawnee, we’re more than electricity, we’re service.

LIGHTING YOUR HOME EFFICIENTLY

Lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity usage in your home.  You can take steps to save money on your monthly electric bill by implementing these simple, but effective, tips:

- Install motion detecting devices.  Motion sensing switches and night lights save energy automatically by lighting the room only when it is in use.  These switches are a great idea for hallways, bathrooms, children’s rooms, and outdoor lighting.

- Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).  CFLs use only about a third (1/3) as much electricity as standard incandescent bulbs.  Sawnee EMC offers a rebate of 1/2 of the cost up to $20.00 when you purchase a minimum of 10 CFLs.

- Use three-way lamps which make it easier to keep lighting levels low when bright light is not necessary.

A little goes a long way...make little changes in your lighting habits.  These small changes can “brighten” your way to lowering your electric bill!

Energy Savers

Did you know that the energy needed to heat water creates the second largest demand (after heating and cooling) for energy in your home?  In fact, water heating accounts for 10 to 25 percent of the typical residential energy bill.  Below are a few ways that you can use hot water as efficiently as possible:

 - Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators.  These can reduce water
consumption by up to 50%.

 - Insulate the water heater
tank and water pipes.  This will reduce the amount of heat lost by water stored in the tank.

 - Clean and maintain your water heater on a regular basis.

 - Install a more efficient unit.  Today’s water heaters are usually better insulated and have heat traps installed on them to reduce the amount of heat loss.

These are just a few ideas to conserve your water usage.  For additional information on water heating and consumption, visit the Department of Energy online at www.eere.energy.gov.

WINDOWS CAN SAVE ENERGY

Windows can be one of your home’s most attractive features.  They provide beautiful views of your home and property, let in natural light (day light), ventilation and solar heating in the winter.  During the summer, however, sunny windows make your air conditioner work two or three times harder...and they also account for 10% to 25% of your heating bill in the winter.

Consider replacing your
single-pane windows with new double-pane windows that are equipped with high performance glass.  Here are some shopping tips to keep in mind when you begin looking at repalcement
windows:

1.  Remember, the lower the U-value, the better the insulation.

2.  In Georgia, where summertime heat gain is the main concern, look for windows with double glazing and selective coatings that reduce heat gain.

3.  Select windows with air leakage ratings of 0.3 cubic feet per minute or less.

4.  Since, here in Georgia, we have both a heating and a cooling season, select windows with both low U-values and low solar heat gain coefficiency (SHGC) to maximize energy benefits.

We hope that you will find this information helpful, but should you have additional questions, please contact our Energy Services Department at 770-887-2363, ext. 7544 or via email at marketing@sawnee.com.  Stay cool and energy efficient this summer.

REFRIGERATORS - IS YOURS ENERGY EFFICIENT?

Improving the overall energy efficiency of your home starts in the kitchen.  Your refrigerator is likely to be the largest single power user in your home, aside from HVAC units and your water heater.  Even though refrigerator efficiency has made enormous strides in the past few years, there are certain actions that you can take to improve the energy efficiency of the refrigerator.  Consider taking these simple measures to help your fridge do its job more efficiently:

 - Cover liquids and wrap food stored in the refrigerator - uncovered foods release moisture which makes the compressor work harder.

 - Clean the door gasket and sealing surface.  You can find out if there is a good seal by closing the refrigerator door on a dollar bill.  If you can pull the bill out without resistance, you need to replace the gasket.

 - Move the refrigerator away from the wall and vacuum the condenser coils at least once a year.

 - Check the temperature of the refrigerator and be sure it is set between 38 degrees F and 42 degrees F.  The freezer should be set between 10 degrees F and 15 degrees F.

If you are considering purchasing a new refrigerator, be sure to look for the ENERGY STAR label - shown above.  A new refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR label will save you between $35 and $70 over a year of usage!
