WASHINGTON YOUTH TOUR RECIPIENTS

Sawnee EMC is proud to announce its representatives in the National Rural Electrification Association Washington Youth Tour, an annual leadership event that is sponsored by electric cooperatives across the nation.  For 2006, Daniel Armstrong, a junior at South Forsyth High School, and Lauryn Howland, a senior at Dawson County High School, were selected to represent Sawnee EMC as delegates on the 2006 EMC Washington Youth Tour.  These outstanding students were selected from applications submitted by students from high schools throughout Sawnee’s service area.

The EMC Washington Youth Tour was inspired by then Senator Lyndon Johnson at the NRECA Annual Meeting in 1957 and, since that time, over 40,000 students have visited Washington representing their local cooperative and learning about our nation’s capital.  Daniel and Lauryn will join students from across Georgia and the nation as delegates of their respective EMCs to learn about electric cooperatives, American history and U.S. government.

Sawnee EMC is excited and proud to take part in this cooperative tradition that has given such an incredible opportunity to exceptional high school students.

HEAT PUMPS IN JUNE?

Temperatures are hot outside - so why talk about heating the inside of your home?  Well, should you find yourself in a position where you need a new air conditioner this summer, you might want to consider replacing it with a heat pump.  We hope you don’t find yourself in that predicament, but if you do, here are the “pros” and “cons” when considering a heat pump.

How does a heat pump work?  In the cooling mode, it operates just like any air conditioner.  However, in the heating mode, it is your air conditioner running in “reverse”.  An air conditioner uses refrigerant to extract the heat from the air inside your house, circulating the cooler air back into your home and releasing the heat outside.  A heat pump uses the same refrigerant to extract heat from the outside air and pump it inside the home.

What are the advantages of a heat pump?  Heat pumps use an unlimited resource - heat taken from the air - and they are the most efficient way to electrically heat a home.  Also, they operate best at a constant temperature, so you don’t have to worry about changing thermostat settings.

What about the disadvantages?  The most prominent issue with heat pumps is that they do not operate efficiently when the outside temperature is 32 degrees F or lower.  This is because there is not enough heat in the outside air to extract.  At those times, heat pumps must use electric heat strips to generate the additional heat needed to warm your home which, if used often and for a long period of time, can be costly.

Want to make the switch?  If you decide to change out your existing air conditioning unit with a 14 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) heat pump, you may be eligible for a rebate from Sawnee EMC.  For more information, please contact our Customer Call Center at 770-887-2363 or via email at marketing@sawnee.com.

$$ FREE MONEY $$

To claim your free money, simply allow Sawnee EMC to install a Load Management Switch on your HVAC unit(s).  The switch helps Sawnee control peak energy usage during summer afternoons when the demand and cost for electricity is high, thus saving money.

The switch allows Sawnee EMC to briefly turn the compressor off on your HVAC unit outside.  The fan will continue to circulate air in your home to help maintain comfort.  It is so brief you should not even notice it is off.  Also, the switch will in no way harm your HVAC unit.

What about that free money?  Sawnee EMC will pay you a $10 rebate per switch per year.  Also, if you sign up now, we will pay you an additional $5.00 bonus!  For more information or to sign up for this program, please call Sawnee EMC’s Customer Call Center at (770) 887-2363 or visit us online at www.sawnee.com.
