Volume 26, Issue 5            We're More Than Electricity, We're Service

It’s National Electrical Safety Month!

Yes...May is National Electrical Safety month, and even though electricity is one of the safest energy sources around, we sometimes forget how dangerous it can be.  As part of this national awareness month, Sawnee EMC would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some simple tips you can do to keep your family safe...both indoors and outdoors...when using electricity.

= No one, a child or an adult, can tell if an electric wire is energized simply by looking at it.  So, whenever you are near an electric wire, you must treat it as being energized and dangerous.

-  Electric cords should never be warm to the touch when in use and should not show any wear or damage.  If you notice either of these things - it is time to replace the cord.

- Never use kites, model airplanes, balloons or other objects near overhead power lines.

- If you have a climber in your family, be sure he or she does not climb any trees that have power lines through or near the limbs.

- Do not play on or near underground enclosures including transformer boxes.  If you see a transformer box that is not locked or that you have a safety concern about for some reason, call Sawnee EMC immediately.  Those harmless-looking green boxes can be, in the right conditions, as dangerous as a downed power line and should be treated the same way.

We hope you will utilize these simple safety tips, not just this spring and summer, but year round as well.  Remember, it doesn’t take fancy equipment or sophisticated technology to keep your family safe around electricity - being aware of and following these and other basic safety rules should help to keep you safe all year!

Small Change Makes A BIG Difference

On February 28, 2006, the Sawnee Foundation granted $13,237 in funds to four (4) more local charitable organizations through its “Operation Round Up” program.  SEMC members participating in this not-for-profit foundation round up their electric bill to the next highest dollar in support of local charities.  In turn, 100% of the funds received is given to local non-profit 501 (c)(3) and or 501 (c)(4) organizations.  These “pennies” make a big difference in meeting the needs of our communities.  If you have not done so, please sign up today.  Contact our Call Center at (770) 887-2363 to join the thousands who “round up” their electric bill each month.

Keep reading to see the difference that “Operation Round Up” has made to those in need.

Energy Savers
Summer is upon us and the temperatures are going to be hot.  How can you beat the heat?  Grab a glass of iced tea and follow these quick tips!
- Avoid using appliances during the hottest times of the day.  Appliances give off heat, which makes your cooling system work harder.
- Use ceiling fans as a supplement for your air conditioner.  Ceiling fans cost considerably less than your A/C.
- Plant shade trees on the east and west sides of your home to help keep out the sun’s rays.
- Close curtains and shades on the east and west sides of your home to help block the sun.
- Change the filter in your heat pump or A/C once a month.
- Caulk holes where wiring and piping penetrate your home.
- Cook, wash and dry clothes, and iron in the morning or in the evening, when the demand on your cooling system is less.

These easy tips will help to keep you and your home cool and comfortable this summer!

-Hall County Emergency Management Agency (CERT) - This organization is actively involved in making the communities of Hall County safer and better prepared to respond to disaster.  They received $2,500 for gear bags and a computer.

- Hall County Family Initiatives - Received $3,000 for food supplies for the group home they operate for individuals with mental illness.

- Families Of Children Under Stress (FOCUS) - This organization received $3,500 for programs and services that provide emotional, informational and physical support to families that have special needs children.

- Cherokee County Sheriff’s Foundation - Received $4,237 to purchase transmitters for Project LifeSaver, a  program that works to quickly locate missing persons with disabilities.

Do you know of a 501 (c)(3) or 501 (c)(4) non-profit organization near your home or business that needs support?  If so, help us spread the word that they could possibly be eligible for funds through “Operation Round Up”.  Applications are accepted on a continuing basis by the External Affairs staff of SEMC.  Contact Cindy King, Director of External Affairs, at 678-455-1539 or via email at cindy.king@sawnee.com, for more information today!

Notice of Capital Patronage Credit Assignments

Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation is a “non-profit” organization and as such our Bylaws require us to set aside, for each member in each operating year, any funds in excess of operating costs and expenses in the form of “patronage capital” credits.

This “patronage capital” is used as equity to reduce the level of debt or borrowings the Corporation would otherwise be required to acquire and is invested in the assets of the Corporation, which include physical assets such as poles, transformers and other plant items.  The Corporation’s policies currently allow for the retirement of patronage capital generally on a thirty-five (35) year rotation cycle, as well as upon demand retirement to estates of deceased members.

Based on the capital furnished by the members of the Corporation in the year 2005, these members will receive an allocation based on this revenue equaling 0.8683% from Sawnee EMC operations and 0.0819% from margins that are assigned to us from associated organizations such as GRESCO, one of our material suppliers; NRUCFC, one of our lending institutions, and others.

You can calculate your “patronage capital” credits assigned by multiplying the total amount of your electric bills for 2005 by the factors shown below (see examples):

If you have questions about your 2005 patronage capital assignment, please contact our Customer Call Center at (770) 887-2363.

Committee on Nominations for the Board of Directors

The Committee on Nominations, which serves an important role in the affairs of the Cooperative, will soon be appointed.  This Committee will receive input from the membership and will place before the membership the name(s) of those member(s) who seek election to the office of Director for the terms that are expiring in 2006.  For 2006, three (3) directors of Sawnee’s Board in Districts No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 have terms that are expiring.

The Bylaws of the Corporation in Article IV Sections 4.02, 4.04, 4.05 and 4.09 outline the director election process, specifically as it relates to the Committee on Nominations and a separate process known as the Petition Process, for the directors’ districts whose terms will be expiring.  Additionally, the Bylaws describe the general powers of the directors.

Located on our Web site is a list of information and downloadable documents that relate to the director elections for 2006.  The address is www.sawnee.com.  There you will find a complete copy of the Bylaws of the Corporation that can be downloaded along with many other useful items for those interested in this year’s director election activity.
