Does Your Home Have Enough
Insulation?
Proper insulation in
your attic and walls plays an important role in improving
the energy efficiency of your home. The higher the R-value
the greater the insulating value. The R-value measures how
well a material insulates…the higher the number, the better
the insulation. When shopping for insulation, compare
products based on their cost per R-value per inch of
thickness.
Several types of
materials are available for home insulation. Consider the
following information when upgrading the insulation in your
home:
-
Cellulose…is ground, recycled newsprint
that’s treated with a fire retardant chemical. It can
be blown into ceiling spaces, can be applied with a glue
binder in walls, and can also be used for retrofitting
walls that have no insulation. There are also systems
for blowing dry loose fill cellulose behind a mesh
support.
-
Fiberglass…is spun glass and is available in
either batts or loose fill. They can be installed
easily by the do-it-yourselfer.
-
Spray-in-place foams…are fairly new in the
southeast. They are similar in composition to the foam
that comes in canisters for home use. They have
excellent air sealing properties and high R-values, but
they are only professionally installed and are more
expensive.
-
Cotton…batts made from recycled textile
scraps. Installation would be the same as for any batt
material.
When you are ready to
make any insulation upgrades to your home, check with Sawnee
EMC to see if your improvements qualify for one of our many
energy efficient upgrade rebates. Simply call one of our
Energy Service Representatives at 770-887-2363, ext. 7544 or

Consumers Can Expect Decrease In Power Bills
In the days of rising prices, it is
still good to see some things going down. Sawnee
EMC is pleased to announce that effective September
4, 2006, its retail rate wholesale power cost
adjustment (WPCA) factor will be lowered. This
action affects all residential and many commercial
accounts served by Sawnee. The net effect of this
action is to reduce the amount each member will pay
for electricity for the remainder of 2006.

Did You Know...?
Sawnee EMC employees often
must come onto your property to perform routine maintenance and
repairs on our electric facilities, sometimes even in very late
hours during emergencies. Keep these points in mind.
-
Sawnee
EMC workers will travel in marked vehicles (logo and name) and
the Supervisor of the crew will always have identification that
indicates he is an employee of Sawnee EMC.
-
Sawnee
EMC staff should never ask to come inside your home.
-
Sawnee
EMC also utilizes independent contractors (e.g. Pike Electric,
MasTec, W. A. Kendall) to perform different types of maintenance
activities and they have SEMC identification and operate in
marked vehicles as well.
If someone approaches you and
suggests they are working for Sawnee EMC and it seems suspicious,
call (770) 887-2363, 24 hours a day, to verify that this person is
there on behalf of Sawnee.

The reduction will occur in the WPCA
factor, which is part of the various retail rate
schedules by which Sawnee EMC electric accounts are
billed. This change in the WPCA factor means that
each account will experience a reduction on their
electric bill of $7.51 for every 1,000 kWh of energy
used per month. The actual reduction will vary and
is dependent on each member’s level of usage in a
month. Any changes to the WPCA factor will continue
to be evaluated on a monthly basis throughout 2006
and, should conditions warrant, further changes may
be recommended.

Program Your Way To Savings Have you considered
installing a programmable thermostat at your home? Wondered
if it can save on your energy bill? If you answered “yes”
to these questions, then keep reading to learn more about
the benefits of programmable thermostats
Programmable thermostats
allow you to turn on the heating or air conditioning system
according to your schedule. Programming the thermostat in
your home to either lower or increase the temperature
(depending on the time of year) allows the equipment to
operate less...thus using less energy. Program the
thermostat when you’re asleep, at work or on vacation to a
temperature that will allow you to save money and energy.
Did you know that Sawnee
EMC will help you pay for replacing your existing manual
thermostat with a programmable one? It’s true, Sawnee will
refund 1/2 of the cost to a maximum of $25 for taking this
energy saving measure in your home. For more information,
please contact our Customer Call Center at 770-887-2363.

Ceiling Fans Can Save Money Did you know
that running a ceiling fan can increase your air
conditioning thermostat setting by four (4)
degrees? This is because ceiling fans produce a
“wind chill” effect that causes the body to feel
cooler while the temperature in the room is warmer.
Ceiling fans are
most efficient when they operate in rooms where you
spend most of your time. Running a ceiling fan in
an unoccupied room will not improve the overall
comfort level of your home. Remember, by changing
the rotation of the fan to run counterclockwise
during colder months you can push warmer ceiling air
downward toward the floor.
