The Dog Days of Summer are Coming

How can you keep your house or business cool this summer?  Turning the thermostat down is not the only way.  If this is the approach you normally take, try following these steps instead to keep cool during Georgia’s summer heat...you’ll save energy, money and you’ll also reduce the stress on your air conditioner.

Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature to a higher setting at night or when no one is home.  Remember, Sawnee EMC offers a rebate for replacing an existing manual thermostat with a programmable one!

Keep lamps and TVs away from your thermostat.  The heat from these items may cause the air conditioner to run longer than needed.

Consider installing white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect the heat away from your house.  Be sure to close curtains on the south and west facing windows during the day to help keep unwanted sun from heating your home.

Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.  Save on water and the cost to operate these appliances.

Make sure there’s adequate caulking and weather stripping around your windows and doors.  Remember that caulking and weather stripping will keep cold air in during these hot summer months.

These six (6) easy steps are guaranteed to help keep your home or business comfortable, and save you money this summer.  For additional energy-saving tips, and money-saving rebates offered exclusively by Sawnee EMC, please visit our Energy Center online at www.sawnee.com or contact our Energy Services Department at 770-887-2363, ext. 7544.

Energy Myths

Have you ever heard something on TV or the radio and wondered if it was true or not?  It’s interesting to find out the truth behind the myth.  Let’s take a look at one myth that relates to electricity.

MYTH:  Fluorescent lighting is problematic.

TRUTH:  Fluorescent lighting has made huge improvements over the years.  That annoying flicker and hum once associated with fluorescent lighting has been eliminated with the use of electronic ballasts.  In fact, compact fluorescent lightbulbs have come a long way technologically.  Manufacturers now produce CFLs that switch on immediately and are brighter than ever.

Another bonus regarding fluorescent lighting is that it is much more efficient than standard incandescent lighting.  This saves you money each month on your electric bill!

Ready to give fluorescent lighting another try?  Sawnee EMC can help.  Contact our Customer Call Center at 770-887-2363 or visit our Energy Center online at www.sawnee.com to learn more about our Residential Lighting rebate!

What Can Pennies Do?

A few pennies here and a few pennies there…doesn’t seem like much, but thanks to our members’ participation in the Sawnee Foundation Operation Round Up…it adds up to a lot.

That’s right, by participating in Operation Round Up, your bill is “rounded” to the next highest dollar.  That seemingly spare change is then donated to local charitable organizations within our service territory and it makes a BIG difference.  See below for the local agencies recently assisted:

·         Whispering Hope Women’s Resource and Pregnancy Center This organization is located in Forsyth County and provides assistance to young, unwed mothers.  They received $5,000 to purchase cribs and mattresses.

·         Forsyth County Lions Club – The Lions Club, located in Forsyth County, raises money to assist low-income residents in obtaining the medical care they need.  They received $1,500 that will go toward eye surgeries, glasses and hearing aids.

·         Habitat for Humanity – This organization is building a house in Forsyth County and received $6,130 to purchase energy efficient materials.

·         St. Vincent de Paul – This financial assistance agency located in Dawson County received $2,400 to assist their clients with rent and house payments.

·         Grayson’s Gift – Located in Forsyth County, this agency coordinates activities for special needs children and their families.  They received $4,700 to sponsor several upcoming activities and to purchase playground equipment.

The Sawnee Foundation also supports education.  The Foundation is excited to announce the recipients of the 2007 Scholarship Awards.  Each of the following students received a $3,000 scholarship to apply toward their chosen college they will attend this fall:

·         Mr. James Chaput – Lumpkin County High School

·         Mr. Craig Isner – Dawson County High School

·         Ms. Hannah Lee – Sequoyah High School

·         Mr. Kevin Schneiderman – Chattahoochee High School

·         Mr. Kyle Sharry – West Hall High School

·         Ms. Lauren Sullivan – Forsyth Central High School

One Call Does It All Before Digging

Are you planning to do a little landscaping this summer?  Before you begin, it is always a good idea to find out where your underground utilities are located.  Now, with the institution of a new “Call Before You Dig” number, it’s even easier to have those lines marked.

On May 1st, officials launched the “811 Call Before You Dig” number.  This three-digit number is very easy to remember and can save lives by preventing dangerous accidents.

How does it work?  Just dial “811” at least 72 hours prior to digging at your home or business and speak with the Call Center staff.  Once the call is placed, the 811 Call Center notifies local utilities that send crews to mark any underground lines.

A “little work” in the yard can mean “big problems” if you don’t take the proper precautions...next time you get ready to work in the yard - just dial 811!  Got questions?  Contact our Customer Call Center at 770-887-2363 and we will be happy to help you.
