Volume 27, Issue 6            We're More Than Electricity, We're Service

Washington Youth Tour Recipients

Sawnee EMC is proud to announce its representatives in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) 2007 Washington Youth Tour, an annual leadership event that is sponsored by electric cooperatives across the nation.

For 2007, Ms. Alexandra Henke, a senior at Northview High School, and Ms. Sarah Overstreet, a junior at South Forsyth High School, were selected from numerous applications submitted by students from high schools throughout Sawnee’s service area.

The EMC Washington Youth Tour was inspired by then Senator Lyndon Johnson during his attendance at the NRECA Annual Meeting in 1957.  Since that time, over 40,000 youth tour students have visited Washington, representing their local cooperatives to learn about the cooperative business model and the innerworkings of our nation’s capital.

Sawnee EMC is proud to take part in this cooperative tradition that has given such an incredible opportunity to exceptional high school students who very well could be cooperative leaders of tomorrow.

Congratulations Ms. Overstreet and Ms. Henke.

How Much Does That Dip in the Pool Really Cost?

Text Box: Three Ways to Save Energy Costs
1)  Only run the equipment as long as necessary.  Check with your pool professional to determine the minimum running time for your system.
2)  Consider the advantages of using a more energy efficient motor when getting a replacement or upgrading equipment.
3)  Ask your pool professional if a   two-speed pump/motor combination are a good choice for your application.  A typical two-speed setup pumps half as much water on low speed, but still offers significant energy cost savings even after running twice as long to pump the same amount of water.

School is out and summer is officially here.  Are the kids ready to get in your pool for the summer?  If so, then keep reading for some interesting information on the electrical cost associated with a pool and how you can keep your wallet from taking a big dip this summer.

The cost of operating “circulating” and “filtration” pumps can add up.  As you know, for pool and spa pumps to keep water clean, they must circulate the water.  An electric motor turns a pump which pushes water through pipes, filters and valves.  Some of that energy and efficiency of the system can be lost if the motor is oversized, the piping is too small or if dirty filters restrict the flow of water.

It is a good idea to operate pool pumps on a timer.  A timer will only turn the pumps “on” and “off” when they are needed and this will help to save on your energy bill.  You can save a substantial amount of electricity by reducing the time the circulating motor operates.  Ask your pool or spa professional if equipment is set correctly.  You may discover that you don’t need to run your pool pumps as much as you think.

Shock Blockers

Did you know that a “ground fault interrupter”, or “GFI”, could save your life by preventing serious electrical shock?  Developed in 1961, a GFI is a fast-acting circuit breaker that senses small imbalances in a current passing to the ground.  In this type of situation, a GFI outlet shuts off the electricity almost instantly.

In newer homes, GFI breakers are typically required on electrical outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoors; or places where water may be present.  In older homes, they should be installed by a licensed electrician as a replacement outlet in these same locations.

The installation of a GFI breaker on household branch circuits could prevent over two-thirds (2/3) of the approximately 300 electrocutions occurring each year in and around the home. Installation of these devices could also prevent thousands of burn and electric shock injuries each year.

Always remember to exercise caution and good safety practices when working around or with electricity.  Consult your local electrical professional or feel free to contact SEMC’s Member Services staff (770-887-2363) for questions about GFI breakers or any other wiring need.
