Open Letter From President and CEO
Customer Service - It’s more than just
electricity at Sawnee EMC.
In this publication each month, we
normally focus on how to be energy efficient, methods to
conserve on your energy bill and a host of other energy
related topics. This month, we would like to deviate
slightly from that theme and tell you about our employees -
more than 300 dedicated professionals who work diligently so
you have the energy you need for your home, your business
and all the other services electricity brings to your life.
Sawnee EMC is focused on “customer
service” and, really, it’s the people of Sawnee EMC who
serve as this focal point. So many give their time and
talents and dedicate their life-long careers to ensure your
needs are met. Whether it’s during an ice storm, a heat
wave or making sure that new service is installed by the day
you need to move in, the staff of Sawnee EMC is there to
make certain we do not disappoint you.
We want to take just a brief moment to
say “thank you” to all who serve the members of Sawnee EMC.
Odds are you will not see these dedicated individuals on the
television receiving some big award or see their picture in
the newspaper, but you will see them on your street and in
your neighborhood working to assure that you have reliable,
cost-effective electrical service.
The number one priority of our
employees is serving the members of Sawnee EMC, just as it
has been for almost 70 years. I am proud of their
dedication to you and the job they do each and every day.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Goodroe
President and CEO |

Energy Myth
September brings, hopefully, cooler temperatures and
a great time to get your home in shape for the winter months ahead.
To that end, we have another energy myth for you to read about this
month.
MYTH:
Closing off vents will help save on your heating bill.
TRUTH:
Closing off vents, or putting a piece of cardboard over a vent, is
generally not a good way to save energy. Modern forced air heating
systems balance their pressure load throughout the house. If one
vent gets “turned off”, it effectively unbalances the system. When
the system is “out of balance”, pressure will build up in the
ductwork, causing excess leakage into walls. Plus, less air will
circulate through the system, which means less air through the
furnace and that means a colder house. So, in actuality, you would
defeat the purpose of “energy saving” in the long run by closing or
blocking off vents.
If you have any
questions or concerns, contact our Energy Services staff at

Disposing of Compact
Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are a good idea. Why?
Because they use less energy, meaning you save on your
electric bill. Sawnee EMC believes in the combined effect
of compact fluorescents so much that, in addition to
promoting them, we also offer our members a rebate for
purchasing them.
|
|
CFLs are expected to last 10 times longer than incandescent
light bulbs, but when the time comes to replace a CFL, as
with incandescent bulbs, some precautions should be taken.
Here are a few tips to assist you:
|
|
• Never place a light bulb (CFL or incandescent) directly in
the trash bin. For either type of bulb, be sure to seal it
in two (2) plastic bags and put it in the outside trash, or
other protected outside location, for pickup by your garbage
service.

|
CFL
REBATE
Purchase
a minimum of 10 CFLs and you are eligible for a
rebate of 1/2 the cost to a maximum of $20 from
Sawnee EMC! Visist our Energy Service
Center online at
www.sawnee.com
for more detail today! |
|
|
• Since CFLs contain a small amount of
mercury (an amount that would cover the tip of a ball point
pen), extra precautions should be taken when disposing of
them. You can wrap the CFL as stated above or you may
consider recycling as a method of disposal. Check with your
local environmental agency for restrictions that may apply
to your location.
• CFLs should not be put in an incinerator.
• If you have Internet access,
information concerning the disposal of CFLs can be found
online at
www.energystar.gov.

Join the Green Generation Today!
Sawnee EMC is committed to
preserving and protecting our environment, but we can’t do it
alone. This is why we offer our members alternate sources of
environmentally-friendly generation. These alternative methods are
collectively referred to as “Green Power”. Today, 36 of Georgia's
member-owned electric cooperatives have signed on with
Green Power EMC. This
represents approximately 3 million Georgians who now have the power
to help the environment by using clean, green energy.
What is Green Power?
Simply put, it means utilizing “green” resources, such as solar,
wind, biomass and water, to generate electricity.
Why Should I Participate?
Just think of the impact...one megawatt of electricity generated by
Green Power resources is equivalent to taking 9,333 cars off the
road, planting 12,666 acres of forest and producing enough
electricity to service 622 homes.
How Can I Sign Up? You can
purchase a “block” of Green Power for an additional $4.50 per month
or a “half block” for $2.25 per month.

Here to sign up today!
Through your support of Green
Power, together we have the power to help the environment. Thank
you for your participation and support.
