(Cumming, June 30, 2020) The Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation (Foundation), announced today that its Board of Directors has approved the awarding of $50,000 to ten (10) local food banks.  In recent months, food banks in many areas, including the local communities served by Sawnee EMC, have been impacted by a significant increase in families needing assistance.  Not only are these organizations facing increased demand, many of them have seen reductions in the food and supplies that they provide.  Nevertheless, the volunteers at these organizations continue to work tirelessly to serve those who rely on their services.

This funding will allow the following non-profit organizations to purchase food and other necessities for individuals and families in need:

  • Cumming First United Methodist Church
  • Fill Ministries / Meals By Grace
  • MSG Foundation
  • MUST Ministries
  • North Fulton Community Charities
  • Saint Vincent de Paul – Christ Redeemer
  • Saint Vincent de Paul - Good Shepherd
  • Saint Vincent de Paul – St. Brendan
  • The Place of Forsyth County
  • Unseen Hands Ministries

“The Foundation is pleased to lend a helping hand and support these local area food bank programs which are being challenged to continue their essential services,” states Deborah Pelfrey, Chair of the Sawnee Foundation Board.  She further states, “This good work is due to the Sawnee EMC members that participate in the Foundation’s Operation Round Up Program – it is member involvement that makes donations like this, and many others, possible.”

Each month, over 18,000 Sawnee EMC members round up their electric bill to the next highest dollar.  This extra change goes directly into the Foundation and is gifted back into the communities Sawnee serves.

Participating Sawnee EMC members donate an average of $6 per year, and these small, yet generous, donations have allowed the Foundation Board to donate over $3 Million back into local communities since its inception in 2003.
